I had MS Flight sim for years and took a flight now and then.. And then I discovered PMDG.... Been hooked ever since.
And besides the fun of actually flying, there is flightplanning with all it's aspects, the different procedures, working the FMC etc...
My only regret is that I didn't started earlier... But hey, now is better thatn never

I often cannot explain why I pursue this hobby we have. I guess I like to have a 'job' to do which I like, when I like.
An additional drive for me is to do some virtual travelling, finding info about the places I visit etc and looking out the windshield to see what rivers/mountains, whatever is out there to learn a little about. Also I love having the sense of a living machine under my control. To keep those routine routes and automated flights interesting for me is to switch off autopilot on departure/arrival/landing whenever ATC or workload allows for it and having a fairly plausible failure system in place to give me a meaningful reason doing checklists and learning the systems in case I gotta save the plane, especially when online. I find X-Plane excellent for this.

I suppose all pilots are born to fly, always loved to watch airplanes fly. Built model rockets, rc airplanes, flew
some Cessnas, soloed sailplanes in Germany, like the technical, scientific theories and challenges.
But now as I am 63, I love to climb into my private Concorde office seat, its such a beautiful place to get away from it all.
