01/14/2010 | Automated e-mails - PIREP approval | Steve Orloff |
AFVA Pilots:
In an effort to reduce the amount of system generated email, and to reduce the clutter to your inbox, pilots will no longer receive email messages when a flight report has been approved. You will continue to receive email messages informing you of the status of flight reports that are placed on hold or are rejected. This will be effective 1 February 2010. //SIGNED// RYAN D. 12/13/2005 | AFV appoints Michael Carter CEO | Luke Kolin |
One of my goals for Delta Virtual dating back to 2001 was to expand our community. SkyTeam partners Delta with a number of quality international airlines, which complement Delta in terms of route and fleet structures. Our first expansion in 2004 was to create a companion virtual airline, Aviation Francais Virtuel, based around Air France.
The success of AFV has been limited over the past year, but still present. Its existence ensure that our new web application platform was expandable, and with approximately 30 active pilots we are capable of surviving. Part of our weakness is due to upper management; we need passionate individuals focused on Air France and European navigation. Accordingly, on December 13th I will be resigning as the CEO of AFV. Michael Carter has proved to be a passionate, reliable addition to our airline in both a Chief Pilot and Vice-President role, and I am therefore turning the airline over to him to lead into 2006. Just like Delta Virtual did not finally take off until mid-2004 when I relinquished my role as CEO, I expect the same sort of wonderful growth to occur with AFV in the upcoming year. I'll still be around to help. Please join me in congratulating Michael on his new role. |

11/09/2005 | AFV Server Upgrade | Luke Kolin |
Approximately two months ago, Aviation Francais Virtuel moved from a personally hosted machine to a shared server in a data center as part of our web application upgrade. The past 60 days have proven the continually increasing reliability of our new site software, but have also exposed weaknesses in our server hosting. We handle over 40,000 requests every day, serving 2GB a day. Our database has approximately three quarters of a million rows, and is continualy increasing in size. A shared database server is inadequate.
As part of our shift to a community funding model, we obtained the resources to rent our own dedicated server. It is a top of the line 3Ghz Pentium IV SuSE linux server, with 2GB of memory and 100GB of storage space. We've spent the last week setting up the server, tuning it and testing it out. I think it's safe to say that it looks to be several times faster and more responsive than what we currently have today, and at $20/month more expensive it is clearly far better value for the money. Accordingly, the web site will be down from approximately 1030 EST to 1130 EST tomorrow while we dump the databases on the existing server and copy them to our new machine. We anticipate this to be a brief interruption in service, with a superior site available for your enjoyment. |
